1970 Power Steering Pump/Dipstick
The Ford engineering part number for the 1970 BOSS 302 Mustang/Cougar power steering pump is D0ZR-3A674-C. The service part number is D0ZZ-3A674-B. The model number, HBA-CC, not the part number, is stamped on the metal I.D. tag attached on the back of the pump. This pump was also used on Mustang/Cougar with the 302-2V and 351 engines. The pump is very similar to the one used on the Maverick/Comet and is shown on the combined drawing which is D0ZR-3A674-A.
The pumps are so similar there are only two parts that make up the difference, the reservoir assembly and the inlet tube.
There were two sources for the pump. Ford and TRW. One of the most common questions is what color should the Ford pump be painted? Over the years many descriptions have been applied to the color of the Ford pump. It is a shade of teal, or shade of blue or it is a GM color. Here we see the answer in Note #2. If the pump was made by Ford it should be painted "DARK BLUE TO MATCH COLOR CHIP 1847-G". Pumps made by TRW were painted "BLACK WITH ESA-M1J53-A & PER PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION ESE-M2P10-A".
Another question that has been asked over the years is what is the correct power steering dipstick? The one with the loop handle or the one with the tab like handle? In the middle of the drawing Ford shows not one, not two but three alternative dipsticks (cap assemblies). It would seem the answer to the question is any or all are correct.
