1969-70 Spoiler Installation

BOSS 302 cars were shipped from the factory with their front spoilers inside the car to protect the spoiler from damage during shipping. That means the spoiler was installed at the dealership. Ever wonder how it was done? Here are the instructions for 1969. Note the 1970 spoilers are slightly different. If you have the same/similar document that is dated or titled for 1970 please send us a copy or scan. Maybe Ford did not redo this drawing for 1970 figuring this one was close enough?

The installation instructions above are lacking a small detail. There is no part number for the screws used to attach the spoiler. It just says, "SCREW WASHER HD." The illustration below does show a part number, 40953-S. 40953-S is a 1/4-20 X 3/4" long hexagon washer head self tapping screw. A slot in the head was optional. There is a slot in the leading threads to help the screw start cutting into a sheet metal hole. The "-S" suffix is generic in these types of illustrations. Further details on the part finish could be found in the Ford Master Parts Catalog or the Assembly Installation Manuals. Most likely the full part number for this application is 40953-S2 which denotes a phosphate and oil finish.

At the time of this writing, we are not aware of any source for 40953-S2 (or another finish). AMK Products does offer 40927-S (1/4-20 X 1/2") in phosphate and oil. 40927-S may be too short. The standard is to have two (2) full/complete threads past the hole.

Ford is well known for making changes and the illustrations are kind of a "snapshot in time" and were not always updated and/published so maybe, just maybe, the above only applies to 1969? The 1970 Body Illustration Manual (available from Jim Osborn Reproductions, Inc.) shows screw 381797-S2, 12 required to mount the spoiler. AMK Products offers these in their kit # F-976.
