Title: Norwalk Cancelled
Post by: 69blueboss on October 29, 2010, 04:22:18 am
FORDS At The Summit 10/5/2010
Cancelled for 2011

Weather and a poor economy leads to the cancellation of Fords at the Summit!

A difficult combination to overcome, has caused event management to take Fords at the Summit off the Summit Motorsports Park 2011 event schedule.  Fords at the Summit was added in 2009 as a replacement to the Fun Ford weekend. Fords at the Summit’s goal was to provide an event for Ford Family collector car and motorsport enthusiasts.  A Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Edsel swap meet along with a manufacturer’s midway combined with a drag racing and show vehicle competition was offered. Designed to appeal to the nostalgic and muscle car Ford family of enthusiasts, the show held promise for growth and great potential.  The unfortunate state of the economy along with two years of poor weather created lack of attendance and the ultimate cancellation of the event.

The Bader family along with event manager, Lisa Leathery wishes to thank sponsors, vendors, car show participants and drag racing enthusiasts for their support.  Event sponsors; NPD, Custom Wire Sets and UPR have demonstrated their loyal and continued support to the hobby.  Offering products for performance and cosmetic enhancements, these companies demonstrate their commitment to the continuation of the hobby we all enjoy.  The decision to discontinue Fords at the Summit was a very difficult one. Again, our sincere thanks to those who have shown support.

Might I suggest one of the NMRA meets? There is one here in Columbus on Labor day weekend. Or a Boss only event?

We've known this for about a month. Lisa was hoping to get another venue lined up before we broke the news. At this point it's not looking good for having anything. Sorry guys.

Slight chance we could hold something in Michigan area. It would be more of a car show than anything. Would there be any interest in that? It's getting kind of late to be changing things, so if anyone has ideas or even leads, that would be great.

Kind of strange they would blame the weather 10 months in the future....

Why doesn't everyone just go to Tulsa? It's about as centrally located as you can get.  I had been trying to make that event for 30+ years and finally went this year only to find a handful of vintage cars. Big disappointment for me. I bet 90% were the new Shelbys. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

is Traverse City Michigan too far North?...check out visit www.visittraversecity.com...the community thrives on tourism and the area, accommodations and restaurants are, IMO, as good as anywhere in the country...the area counties have spectacular roads for the cars and vistas and early fall colors make Vermont blush...if there is interest, let me know and I will make the first step...check out the website!

I'll bet something could happen in Carlisle in June again. What would it take for it to happen?

How about something in the southeast, like Florida?  Any big shows that we could tie into down there?

I doubt we'd get too many cars coming to Florida. The North East area is where most of the cars and people are. We had 225 BOSS cars show up at Carlisle in 2005. About 40 or so showed up at Tulsa a few years later and about 50 showed up at Knots a year later. Even if you factor in that we had a very exceptional turnout at Carlisle, you could figure 50- 100 cars would have shown up under normal circumstances. The Carlisle idea is good, but I'm sure we're way too late to that party. But good idea.....

I can't see how the Carlisle Ford Show would not work, anyone can sign up and park their show car on site?  The Ford show is nowhere near as big as the Spring and Fall shows.

The SAAC usually has a show in Detroit. I'm sure they would welcome us. This last sumer it was at Ford headquarters. Woodward dream cruise could be a option. With Ford bringing the new Boss out they might be open to a reunion in their display at the cruise.

Boss Nationals were held in Tulsa, Okla back in June, 1999. I don't recall how many Boss cars attended.
It would be cool to have Boss Reunion at a site with a Historic Trans Am event. Not sure but isn't 2011 the 45th anniversary of Trans Am ? Maybe Bossboy has some idea of the 2011 schedule and any event beyond the West Coast.

If we always target the place where most of the cars are located and people are, we're always going to be in the north east.

My vote is simply to spread the opportunities around to different parts of the country.  There are many great shows around the country that would be great places to host our Boss Reunions.

We did that. Carlisle, Tulsa then Knotts in CA. Now we're back to the Northeast to hopefully start over. The big problem when asking this question is that everyone wants it in their backyard. I happen to live in the Northeast making it easy for me to do an event. I was lucky to have Paul Mueller take care of Tulsa and Mark Brown do Knott's. These 2 guys did a fantastic job of carrying over the 2005 event. Not easy to get somebody to dedicate their lives for a few months to a year to take care of an event like this. That sorta brings me back to the Northeast (NOT making my wife happy as I promised her after 2005 to NOT do any more....)

Still looking at ideas. Stay tuned.

I understand "we did that".  I attended all 3 events.  My point is let's keep moving it around.  And FWIW, I'm not suggesting to have it in my backyard.  I enjoy going to places I've never been before, seeing cars i've never seen before, and meeting people I've never met.  Especially when it involves one of the big national events.

The only problem with Carlisle All Fords is it rains every year.  It's just PA in June.  But it is a big big show and there is plenty of room.  I would expect that Ford tent will have a big calling for the Boss, being it will be about the same time the 2012 goes on sale.  So, from that point of view it would be very cool to see the Boss community take over Carlisle.  Maybe we can even scare the rain away.

Another option would be to work with SAAC.  I'm not sure where they are going to be in 2011, but be there will be a track involved.  ;)

That thought crossed my mind too. SAAC, as of 2 weeks ago at least, doesn't have anything nailed down yet. At least that's what Howard Pardee told me at the Hershey meet.

This is a great central location and one of the best tracks in the country.
I took my FORD GT up there last year and it was great. 2010 Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman presented by FORD. Maybe Ford will have the new BOSS 302 up there this upcoming year they definitely have enough space for our cars.  Road America 2011  July 14-17 Kohler International Challenge with Brian Redman  (Vintage Cars)

There is historically a nice grouping of Boss cars at the annual SAAC shows so it's a good idea to throw around. More cars is more people and perhaps a bit of leverage for fees associated with the track/ etc.
SAAC 33 and 34 had 4-5 Boss 9's each and many Boss 302's so the community at SAAC certainly supports the cars.

SAAC-MCR always has a very nice gathering on Memorial Day weekend.  Just a thought.  Where ever it is is fine as I drive mine a lot and a long trip is always fun.  I'm trying to use up my 16" tires so I can justify buying new wheels and tires.  Can't seem to find those 16" sizes anymore. wink wink

What about a Boss Reunion at the beautiful Brown County state park in Indiana during the Shelby Clubs Spring Fling?  They always have Tigers, Panteras, Cobras, Boss's, etc.  It's a great location with lots of shade trees and near-by shops for spouses that may get bored at the show site.  Just a thought.  Here is a link.  Norm

Brown County near Bloomington, In is a great idea. As ablue69 said, beautiful area with lots of shade. Also lots of hotel rooms, good places to eat and shopping nearby in Bloomington, home of Indiana University for those who might not know. There is also camping on the state park property if that's what you are into.

The Grand Am Continental tire finale is at Mid Ohio Sportscar course in September.  Its just a thought, but someone might want to ask someone at Ford Racing about hosting the Boss Nationals at the race.  With the new Boss car on the street and the factory supported BossR in the race its a natural.

Mid Ohio!!!!!!!!

A road race course for a reunion of Trans Am Mustangs Boss 302's.

That sounds like a no brainer.

I was there in 2006 or 2007 with my 1970 B2 and the show cars got to take laps on the track(no high speed stuff) ,but the track photographer took some great shots.

I think this place shoud be highly considered. Mansfield ,Ohio is real close with many hotels and restaurants. Smaller city with out the pain of big city traffic, etc.

Just my 2 cents

I think MId-Ohio would be great. They have vintage races there at the end of June every year. That would be way cool!! I would imagine that Ford will be there with the new Boss. Sounds awesome to me....

Anyone in the surrounding East Tennessee area is welcome to my event. We have been a big Ford haven for the last 3 years. www.forgemusclecarshow.com  Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg is 10 miles away great family attraction area. We hosted the Boss 429 Reunion 3 years ago and the Talladega / Cyclone reunion this year.

Thanks Tim-

That's how it pretty much needs to be done.  Piggy-Back an established Event.  I think the "Mid-Southeast" would be a great place for the next Reunion.
Long way for us West Coasters but we just had ours.  Waddaya think Randy?

And if it winds up in Ohio, I can help out from afar.  Either way we will be there.  ;D

I think tagging onto the Woodward Dream Cruise would be awesome - I went in 2001 and there was a huge gathering of Ford products that cruised to Ford World HQ.  The Ford display had the then new "Bullet" Mustangs - I think an old BOS tie-in with the new BOSS would be awesome.  Anyone have conections at Ford to know what is planned in support of Woodward in 2011?

Ok guys. We have 2 options we're looking at real close and they would be piggybacked onto an existing event. I would really like to make a decision and announcement before Thanksgiving (I know, that's tomorrow...) My reason for that is families make plans for vacations sometimes as early as Thanksgiving. You need plenty of time to schedule vacations and also finish your cars! Although to me, just like in 2005, I'd still want you to bring it even if unfinished. We had several cars in various stages of restorations and had a lot compliments on that.

Keep your eyes peeled here!

If one of the two choices is piggy backing with the MOCSEM's 2011 Mustang Memories show at Ford World Headquarters on August 7, 2011 my vote is for that. I attended the event last year and it was GREAT. Also tying in with the release of the new Boss 302 with a Boss reunion at the Ford Headquarters would make for a perfect scenario.  Hooking up with the Mustang Alley people at the Woodward Dream Cruise would be a close second for the event!!!

Ok guys. As much as SAAC-36 would have been cool to do, FORD has made a slightly better offer in my opinion. They threw a few things on the table, which if only a few of them happen, you'll love what is in store.

Mark Aug 5 -7 2011 on your calendars for the BOSS Reunion. It will be held in conjunction with the MOCSEM event for the Sunday car show at FORD World Headquarters, but we have other plans for Friday and Saturday. We'll be making blocks available at local Hotels, but I think we'll try and stay at just one if we can so we can all socialize in the parking lot at night.

Details to follow, but at least you can make vacation plans and now you have a bit more time to get your cars done!
