Title: Is this a fake distributor?
Post by: Aussie_Boss302 on December 03, 2012, 07:18:22 pm
I’ve read several threads about identifying fake distributors and I must admit I’m pretty confused.  The discussions seem to center around the location of the main wire hole.  At the risk of initiating another flare up, the distributor below came as a spare with my car.  It seems correct (as far as I can tell), but the wire exit hole isn’t close to the cap hold down clamp… supposedly, where the real deal exits.

Does this look like a “reproduction” and if it is where did it come from?

Thanks,
Roy

It looks legit except for the black coil wire coming out of the distributor. It should be closer to the distributor cap clip. Thats some times a give away to a fake but some folks claim some original Boss distributors had coil wires located there.  :-\

if its a spare, or if u didnt pay top dollar, and it works, then i dont see an issue with using it. if u have doubts, then dont sell it, but jsut keep it as a spare or use as ur regular one and put ur legit one away

I don't intend to sell it, or use it for that matter, and I didn't pay big bucks for it.  I'm just curious, if it's a fake, then someone changed Cxxx to C9ZF... That doesn't look easy.  The "E" and "X12" don't look like the ones stamped on Mustangtek website.  If it wasn't refinished (with visible sanding marks on the housing) I could argue it's the real deal... I can't argue it's the real deal.

Does anyone have a hole correct distributor with stampings similar to these?

Even if you ignore the incorrect hole location, this is a clear restamp.

I don't intend to sell it, or use it for that matter...

So you are going to do what with it?  Looks good, and will work for 99% of the mission 99% of the time.  I'll give you 1 million for it.

Danoh, I have recently read the microscopic print on your offer and it seems you are really offering 1,000,000 Doll Hairs, not Dollars.

Yes the wire hole is too far away from the cap hold down clip.

If you magnify the E you can clearly see a C stamped under it.

Good eye.  The hole location and severe sanding - dead giveaways.

If you magnify the E you can clearly see a C stamped under it.

For those still interested... there appears to be a C under the E

A 3D image also confirms

For the nerds, infrared 3D image

There appears to be what remains of a vertical line at the Z

3D image shows something is there, but it's not conclusive

This might be a fake distributor  :-\

Aussie_Boss302,

Holy Crap O Rama  Thats amazing  :o :o What clarity and detail at that magnification.  No doubt in my military mind that thats a bogus dizzy. Great job. The crooks are getting better at faking these parts for sure. I'm glad I bought all my Boss parts to do my resto 22 years ago before the flood of bogus parts onto the market. Every time a part comes up as a suspicious fake on this site, I check the part in question on my Boss just to make sure. So far I'm hitting 100%.
Thankx for posting those pics.  ;)

BOSS-STANG,

You are very welcome.  You're fortunate to have collected your pieces before those buggers started taking advantage.  Personally, I can't spend $2k on the real deal and I'd rather bolt on a Mallory dual point as opposed to using this item... It'll remain in my box of Rare Spares  ::)

Aussie_Boss302 - Impressive analysis of the letters on the distributor.  My Boss 302 was missing its original distributor, so I bought a 289 HiPo unit which actually has the correct date code for my car.  But since my car runs well with the electronic distributor that was on the car when I bought it, the HiPo unit has been sitting in the garage for over a year.

I can see it coming..
Soon there will be more BOSS 302s around then
the actual number ever made.
something like the Z-28 .
All of us members on here that have owned a BOSS
need to keep doing our thing posting what is real and what is not !
The new members and people getting into out hobby real have no
idea as to what to look for when they find a BOSS for sale.
I would say this site is there bench mark for a real answer.....
Nitro.
