Found a Boss 351 and need opinions on what to do with it
« on: March 16, 2018, 02:55:09 pm »
My dad stumbled upon a 1971 Grabber Lime Boss 351, and believes he can get it for a pretty reasonable price. The engine is out of the car and some of the parts and pieces are scattered, but overall it appears to be pretty complete.

The VIN checks out as a Fastback Boss 351, Dearborn, etc. Green vinyl buckets, 4-speed, 3.91 rear end. Looking at the motor, block appears to be the correct D0AE-L, but unsure about the heads and carb. The intake on the engine is a D0AE-9425-L, which I believe is a standard 351C intake, not the correct aluminum intake. Valve covers appear correct.

My question really though is this: What do we do with it? I think we have both agreed that we do not have the time or money to properly restore the car, so perhaps the best route is to just flip it and get it in the hands of someone who can invest the proper time and funds. I have attached a few pictures to help you gauge the condition of the car.

I wouldn't bother. Way too much effort and expense to even try to "flip it".

Yeah, the "don't bother" advise isn't too good - in my opinion - since we don't know what you would have to pay for it.

Depending on price of course, many would be on that like a Chihuahua on a pork chop!  :o ;D

Have you contacted the Boss 351 Registry yet?  Rick might be able to give you some good advice on value, and probably point you toward a buyer as well.

Prior to the recent run up in auction sales - projects (read with needing body/ or missing motor) etc sold in the 10K to 25K range.   As I sold one for $11K and one for $24K in the last 5 years.   In the last 2 years "asking prices" have jumped just from WORD OF MOUTH on value.

When someone wants a project - they usually default to "level of pain" they can incur.   Body guys buy things they can do and mechanics shy away from $40K body restorations!   When the "carrot" is the look at the price of restored Boss's .......everyone picks the high point.   Those cars "aren't Frankinsteins", have had EXTENSIVE restoration, documentation and unaltered sheet metal, date codes and CORRECT 1971 parts.

It is the above reasons that projects (as well as many car offered for sale) AREN'T priced right to begin with. It's funny THE NUMBER is usually right at 50% higher than the eventual sale!   Many MANY items tend to be that.  I don't know if it is peoples inability to price, do math or everyone is in double what they should be and want their money out !   I turned down a car a month - as not the right car, profitable or just "priced out of line" with current comps.

Mark
P.S.  I don't have a suggestion on "what to do" - everyone's money needs, family situation, ability in a garage (read history of getting 5 year projects finished) and TIME is different.

Call Ed, he'll have it back to running and the car will be saved....play your cards right and you'll get to visit and ride in a nice BOSS 351.

I am surprised that a 46K  mi Bi looks so trashed. Each picture shows shows something  amiss with the vehicle, including the lettering on the hood. A suggestion, charge a modest finders fee and let Ed purchase the vehicle directly from the owner.

Have you decided what to do with it?
