Boss heads on 351w?
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:16:14 am »
Will Boss 302 heads fit on a 351w block and what manifold would you use?

They will fit but it isn't a bolt on. The head bolts holes are smaller than the bolts on a 351W. It is probably easier to use 351C heads that are modified for a Windsor than it would be to modify the Boss heads. Hawkrod

Hawkrod... I think the head bolt holes on a Boss 302 head and the 351c head are the same... its just the Boss 302 block has 7/16 threads. I just put 69 Boss 302 heads on a Dart 8.2 deck block and used the off the shelf 351c head stud which are 1/2 and they fit just fine.

Maybe I'm missing something...
69 Yellow Boss 302... Back to not done.... Now back to almost done. Again.

I'ts a tough job. It requires special spacers to fit the manifold to the heads and block. It can be done though. Goodluck.

These guys have done it.

yes they fit. now depends on what you are doing? head bolts/studs are not the issue. intake is due the 351w being 9.2 deck height and boss being 8.2 deck height so stock boss manifold will NOT work. i do not know if spacers are made, but i think? jba made the track boss intake for 9.2 deck height.they were called street boss and track boss . getting hard to find but they are out there.

as for the bolts/studs i am not sure if 351w had 1/2 head bolts or the 7/16 but you are better off having them machined for 1/2 and using arp studs.this way if you bump the comp. ratio you don't have to worry about it with 1/2 torque.

also but the way you may-- MAY need special headers. not sure if stock exhaust manifolds work. i don't use stock stuff due to race car application.

realize you raized the exhaust port about 1 inch higher than a std boss motor. may hit few things.

i built a motor (t/A spec) with bud moore high port heads which raise the port floor 1 inch . i had stan at FPA make set of headers for me.

Excellent replies, many thanks. The 351 was going to be a stroker, the best bit of advise there for me was the fact the Hookers probably would not work, I already had to bash them around with the 302.
Thanks again for the replies, Back to the drawing board then.
A mate of mine over here, has just imported one of the new Boss blocks very cheap with crank rods and pistons for $1700 + shipping, I expect I will end up doing the same. and ditch the 351 idea.

If you are thinking about installing BOSS heads on the new BOSS shortblock, it won't work.   You'll need to install pistons designed to work with the BOSS heads, as the motor is set up to work with Windsor heads.    New pistons, rings, rebalance, reassemble, etc.    You would be be better served by purchasing the new bare block and building it up from there.   good luck..

Exactly,  that's about the price for a new BOSS bare block.

Check Edelbrock they make the intake to put 351C heads on both 302 (8.2 deck) and 351W(9.5 deck) e-teck is what I think it is listed on Edelbrock sight.

Depending on what your trying to accomplish, these heads:  http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Engines-Components/Section/Cylinder-Heads/Part-Type/Cylinder-Heads/Brand/Edelbrock/Make/FORD/Engine-Size/5-8L-351/Year/1970/Engine-Family/Ford-Cleveland/?Ns=Rank%7cAsc and this intake: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-7183/ might be the way to go. Or the intake from here: http://www.tmeyerinc.com/B&Aintake.html as was posted above. The engine would weigh just about the same as a stock Boss 302.

Yes it will work. It has been done many times over and over. Some call it a "Clevor". Head bolts the same as a Cleveland. Check your piston to valve clearance. No adaptors are needed for intake manifolds. The choices are Edelbrock, and now again by the old B & A performance types. As for headers, use 351 Cleveland, not Boss 302. The "C" engine is a higher deck and nearly as close to the "W" block/deck height with the Boss/Cleveland head combo. Good luck and have fun!
