New 1970 Boss 429/302 Exhaust Progress
« on: July 10, 2011, 04:31:58 pm »
Now that I'm done with the 1966 Shelby/Mustang exhaust (see link below for some progress photos on that system) I have started on the 1970 Boss 429/302 systems.

http://www.scottfullerreproductions.com/2009NewsandUpdates.html

I've started making the tooling for fabricating the muffler end-caps and baffles.  The drawings are finished (some shown here) and the material has arrived for making the dies.  Some machining has started to produce the blanks that will eventually be formed into end-caps.

Original assembly line systems are being used to copy the bends and identify the flattened areas.  Sample pipes are being worked currently.

The 1966 systems took a little longer than expected which delayed the start of the 1970 systems.  But now that things are underway, hopefully they will go smoothly.  The best case scenario would have the production systems ready to sell by the end of 2011.

People frequently ask what my exhaust systems sound like as compared to the originals.  Here is an assessment of the 1966 Shelby exhaust based on a prototype system I installed on a 1966 Shelby a couple of weeks ago.

"All that I can say is it sounds fantastic and far better then the one that was on previously.  I have a friend who is a “retired” designer for Ford and another friend who worked at Shelby (during the glory days) but who were amazed at the sound and the look of the exhaust system.  The deep throaty sound is something that was missing and really makes the car feel more like a real 60’s muscle car was one of the comments."

I will continue to post updates here as progress is made.

Is there a plan for a exhaust system for 1969 cars?

As usual Scott,  your stuff is looking exceptionally good.  I wish some of the other Mustang part reproducers paid as much attention to authentic deal,  fit and exactness as you do.

I have a full set of the Ford blueprints for the 1970 dual system including "muffler tuning codes" if you are interested.

MarkIV,

I tried to email you but it came back undeliverable.

Can you email me directly at sfreproductions@aol.com

I have what I thought was a complete set of Ford drawings but would like to talk to you about what you have.

UPDATE:

The 1970 Boss 429/302 exhaust is nearing completion.  I still hope to have it finished by the end of the year.  I have made and shipped a prototype system to Ed Meyer to confirm the fitment of the system and integrity of the box used for shipping.  Below are some photos of the prototype system welded up prior to packaging.  The pipes are exactly like the originals with correct bends and flats (see photos) in the over-axle pipes and front pipes.  The mufflers will be available with 4-dates (July 1969, October 1969, November 1969, and January 1970).  January 1970 was the last run of 1970 mufflers and were used on cars until the end of production.  I'm still waiting for the mufflers, but they should be done within a few weeks.  I still have a little work to do on reinforcing the shipping box, but the pipes arrived at Ed's with no damage.  It's a very big (and heavy) box (98x19x14), but is within what UPS accepts.  Cost to ship the pipes to Ed (Indiana) from me (California) was $218.

Ed put the pipes on a car yesterday and told me that they "fell into place", looked great, and there were no clearance issues.  They are very tricky to bend on the staggered shock side and there is no room for errors in bending.  Ed put them on the car with the rear axle installed but said that two people were required to avoid scratching the bottom of the car.  He also mentioned that the staggered shock side needed to be installed first.  If Ed gets on later he can provide additional clarification.

I'll post again when the mufflers arrive and when they are done and ready to ship.  I don't have a final price in the exhaust yet and won't until all the bills come in for the tooling.

Thanks for your patience,

Scott Fuller
