P.S. Installation Pictures Needed
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:35:35 pm »
Now that I am going to re-install the power steering, I need to ask another favor.

Anybody have some pictures, ideally from above and from below the car, of the hoses that route from the pump, through the oil cooler and to the control valve and back? When I removed the system, the oil cooler was not installed, but I have it so I may as well use it.

Thanks.

I found a picture in the "Engines Stock" part of the forum.

Does the return hose (cylinder to pump) just get routed through the oil cooler instead of a direct line from cylinder up to the pump?

Yes, the return hose from the cylinder goes to the cooler and then to the pump. here is a picture of my Mustang. You can see the hoses attached to the cooler at the top of the picture looking from the bottom.

Good post I am putting the correct power steering system back into the 1970 Boss as well

Guys,
If you give me a few days I will try to post pictures of my 70 P/S car installation. I just got through installing it in the last few weeks. I am a little "under the weather" right now and busy at work. However, I will get the pictures shortly.

Thanks so much Tom.
Be sure to show us some additional pictures of your BOSS as well.   ;D
I've got the Ford Shop Manuals and the Restoration Guide, but they don't really show anything that helps as far as I could find.

John, did you see the photo 69BossElim posted on this thread?
Isn't that the bracket you are talking about?
His hoses are not OEM for a BOSS but the bracket is standard.

why are you going back to power steering.  Your input convinced me to get the manual steering conversion kit.  Problems?

Hi Randy,
I don't know if your question is for John or me....I went to manual when I was tracking the car.  I have retired it from track days so now I have re-installed the original PS and am happy I did.

Randy,
If you are asking me the question, The 1970 is a different animal than my manual steering 1969. The 1970 originally came with Power steering and it is my goal to make that car like when it left the factory.

honestly, with the whole "W-code thing", it is VERY "busy" with the hoses for the oil cooler, hoses for the power steering cooler, and, oh yeah, the dang power steering itself!!!  I have been driving my '09 Shelby now for over 3 years and am ready to put my Boss back on the road (registration) and was looking forward to the "road feel" with manual steering.  I am running 245's (BFG's) up front.  Did you find it difficult to drive on the street Kevin with the manual conversion?  I still think I want to at least try it out.  At any rate John, you know me, I have EVERYTHING that is "supposed" to go on my Boss but is currently not on it.  Hell, I put the Shelby roll bar in last year with all the matching fiberglass coverings and I think it is THE coolest option to add to a Boss, but that's just me.  I may, like Kenny, eventually go back to the original Medium Blue metallic with a blue interior and drive it somewhere to sit and watch the grass grow.  Ha!  Sorry Kenny - couldn't resist....

Randy,
Yes, I did get tired of driving on the street with the manual set up.  And since I did not have to source or purchase the Power Steering system, I had the pump re-built and reinstalled it.  I still have not spliced in the oil cooler, but will get to that eventually.

With the manual steering P265/50-15 on the front of mine,  it was not that bad to drive city or hwy,  but I was stronger then too.  Parallel parking it was a bit of a pig to maneuver,  but really not that awful.  How bad it can get also depends on wheel offset.  Too much in the wrong direction can really aggravate the effort.  Caster also is a factor,  but at 2-1/2 deg,   again,  it wasn't that much of a problem.

Guy's,
My car is manual also.
Parking it is not fun (Car & Driver magazine) stated parking a BOSS 302 with manual steering is like doing 8 push-ups.
Once the car is rolling its not that bad.
And IMHO it gives the car the feel it was designed for, great road feel.
I've driven power steering BOSS 302's into a corner hard, I feel lost and scared. my.02

Standard steering is for drag racing,
Power steering is the best for every day street use !
The HP you may save means nothing ! Like maybe 5 HP
with standard steering ?

245 x 60 x 15 no steer. Fine on the highway, okay parking as long as the car is in motion. I never turn steering wheel if the cars not moving, mechanic once told me extra strain screws up the ball joints. Eddie

I'm in the process of putting the power steering back on mine only because it came with it. I have a feeling I am going to miss the feel of the standard steering. I never liked the feel of the power steering when I had it on the car, you just need to make the car move a little to turn it W/O the power steering and it isn't bad at all. But then I used to drive an 64 F-250 with 38 inch tall monster mudders on it and no power steering.
