Upper Shock Tower Bracket Spacer
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:13:20 am »
Can anyone post pictures or solutions to increasing the shock travel by raising the upper shock tower bracket? I've already got the shock raised 3/8" or so by welding spacers on the top of the bracket where the shock bolts on(see pic). But with the ride height set where it's at now, I've got traces of the shock cylinder coming in contact with the inside of the upper shock bracket. Is there a spacer that was used at some time to allow for more shock travel inside this bracket so it doesn't hit?

... having trouble uploading pictures. Will try later.

They used an aluminum spacer under the shock bracket. I heard 65-66 shock brackets were taller than 67-70 so you might try a pair of them if you want. Here are some pictures.

Thanks Guys... sent Brian a PM. Where there any other tricks other than the spacers and / or the 65-66 brackets?

Brian,
Got the spacers the other day. They fit great and should solve my issues. I'll try to post a pic once I get it all buttoned up.

Many Thanks...

Curious how the lower control arm is positioned at that ride height.  Ideally geometry wise,  the center of the lower ball joint and the center of the inboard pivot of the lower control arm are the same elevation relative to the ground.  If the ball joint is higher relative to the inboard pivot you are to the point of diminishing camber compensation as well as lowering the front roll center,  which in turn increases the roll couple moment on the front suspension.

You can shim the shock mounting bracket until the hood gets in the way.  Better to shim the bracket up than the head of the shock.
