BOSS 302 SNORKEL TUTORIAL REFERENCE
« on: January 20, 2013, 03:37:03 pm »
In this tutorial, I’m going to try and show you how to correctly identify an original 1970 Boss 302 Snorkel with Ford engineering number D0ZZ-9A626-B. Hopefully this will help the person just starting out in the hobby or some that are already in the hobby and want to reference the correct parts. As to common belief, the 1970 boss 302 snorkel is not unique just to the Mustang and Cougar. The 1970 429 SCJ Torino also sported the Ford engineering DOZZ-9A626-B Snorkel. The snorkel I will use for this tutorial is off a Dearborn Boss 302. This Snorkel is an early take off part with original paint and is a good candidate to reference from as it has never been modified and is the way it left the factory.

Very well done but I would advise caution regarding the info about spot welds. They vary greatly on original snorkels because they were dependent on how fresh the tips were that were welding them. You will never see blown out ones like shown on the repro but they are not all as nice and crisp as the ones on your snorkel. The spot welder tips wear as they are used and it will depend on how fastidious the worker was on changing them. Also note that as they wear they leave a larger impression that may be shallower and more "puddle like" rather than a nice round divot. I looked at several originals and the size of the spot welds can be the same or vary from each joint and of the dozen or so I just checked they varied significantly. It also actually looks as if they may have made sub assemblies and joined the end to the flange and stepped part assembly because most are different (but not all) and some have the nice spot welds near the air cleaner while the further out ones are "softer". One final detail that many fakes get wrong is the flange that attaches to the air cleaner has a 90 degree edge all of the way around the opening that bolts against the air cleaner body  while ones from other Fords have a small step on the face that bolts to the air cleaner body. This about 1/2 inch wide or so and is actually at the bottom of a regular Ford snorkel and is assembly indexer. When a regular snorkel flange is cut down this step is evident. Hawkrod

Here is a regular 289/302 snorkel where the step is evident at the bottom center of the opening:

Does any other Ford product have the same snorkle end piece? I have the elbow that connects to the air cleaner but someone cut of the snorkle. Maybe another car has same end piece I could graft on to the elbow?

Thanks for posting this shelbyboss302.
This makes it so much easier when shopping for a car, knowing what's correct, and what's not. I still have the shifter handle info burned in to my memory. :)
I really appreciate the time you spent doing this.
Cheers,
Bob.
