Hi Jack

All 71 cars got the gray flocking over the tank, supports and inner quarters.  (there is a difference in early and late cars SHADE)

Best to look at TRUNK photos at mega site.  http://429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.com/trunk.htm

They were shot with a product (or similar) to Zonatone. Base color with specks of, I believe it's two, other colors in the product. It can be a sensitive finished product so some (I did) low gloss clear coat over it to lock it in. Believe its a gray base with white and possibly black flecks but sure others will submit what they have seen in person.

Here are a few pictures  - Hope this helps

The inner quarters ARE NOT body color.  The flocking covers the entire area (like sound deadner of the early cars) and fades out just past the wheel arch so it is uniform.

It is not uncommon to see overspray on the rear quarter side light housings as they were inplace when sprayed.   (BUT NOT THE WIRES YET)

Do a search for on eBay for a PPG paint color chart (paint chip sheet) for 1971 Ford vehicles. Auction #362743806582 is such an auction. Look close at the bottom of the page and you'll see a paint listing for trunk paint. This 1971 paint chart typically calls-out the trunk paint as: "Trunk Spatter Finish. Gray DX-1756"

I doubt one can still get the specific PPG trunk paint these days although I really haven't asked around or at any paint shop, but this seems to be the official paint code for the trunk paint for 1971 Ford vehicles.

Trunk splatter paint can still be obtained. There should be a couple colors of GM (AC-Delco) trunk splatter paint and a couple versions from Dupli-Color too. I don't believe the Dupli-Color TSP100 Gray-White is a 100% exact match, but if you are looking for a simple spray can version you might find it acceptable. The 1971 Ford trunk should be a darker gray base with both black and white specs in it as Jeff says.

I also found an earlier model year paint sheet call out of PPG DX-1756 trunk spatter paint as: BLACK AND WHITE ON GRAY BROWN. I take this to mean its black and white specks on a gray-brown base.

If your local auto parts store carries Dupli-Color but you don't see the trunk spatter paint on their shelf then they can probably order it for you. But like I said TSP100 is not an exact match. No black specs and its a lighter shade of gray.

I believe the original OEM 'spatter paint' was sourced from Du-Pont, as were the GM cars. Try looking at Zolatone's website to find a close match.
Current lifelong project:
1969 Mustang Fastback/FOX chassis, 6 speed, 4 wheel discs, with a modern Can-Am 494 (Boss 429), Kaase headed, intake mounted with a 1425 cfm 'B' Autolite Inline carb, ala Trans-Am style…Whew!
