Rear Window Gasket Fit?
« on: September 09, 2019, 08:35:25 pm »
One more thing on the rear window and rubber gasket, we installed it today to check overall fit, this repo gasket protrudes out past the metal window trim. I checked on another car with window still in place with original Ford gasket and the rubber is even to the metal trim molding.
Is there any other gasket that might fit better like the Ford one does?

Randy,
The reproduction rear window seal is to thick. It does make it hard to put the trim back on. About the only thing you can do to help is trim down the little raised ridge on the top. You don’t see it anyway one trim is installed. Other than that is look for a nice used original which is hard to come by. Or NOS which is even harder to come by.

So glad i removed cleaned and reinstalled my original you dont want to damage your trim due to bad gasket fitment.

Lots of people just cut the original to remove the window. :-[

I have read that some people have used a potato pealer to shave down the gasket to fit better. It seems crazy enough to work.

Replacement material for the sail panels is thicker than the original.  That pushes up on the gasket and adds to the problem

A week after my full restoration in 2008 I took the family out for the maiden voyage.  Within a half hour an unexpected downpour drenched the car.  One of the back seat passengers alerted me to a leak that eventually dumped nearly a half inch of water into the package shelf.  We used jackets and t-shirts and any other available clothes to try and mop up.  The takeaway is to check carefully for gasket leaks before ever leaving home.

I looked at a 70’ today and the Louver rubber trim appears to lay on top of the metal window trim as it gets to the bottom of the window, can anyone look at theirs to see if this is similar?
 Thanks
