FYI

The double valve stem is not correct for 69 and 70.

HHMMM    The double valve stem is exactly like the one on my original BOSS spacesaver.

I have owned this car since January 1977

I can guarantee, and so can Many others here..no 69 or 70 Mustang came with the double valve stem.

The double valve stem did not come out in till 72 or 73.
Owned my BOSS since March 1974.

Just FYI, tire is dated the 30th week of 1975, The  "DOT" Tire Identification Number on the tire was standardized and became a requirement in March, 1971 so if the tire has "DOT" above or before the number, it's 1971 or newer.

If I'm not mistaken ......  It's a pressure relief valve to prevent over inflating the tire. Apparently there were issues ....

Some tires have two separate holes and stems, then it seems they went to the metal twin stem thing. All the original 69/70 tires I've seen used a single standard stem....

70cj428,

Never knew about the "DOT" (Department of Transportation) thing, Very cool!

Thanks for sharing that.

Just to add....there were problems with the early Space Saver Spare.

People were sometimes injured while inflating the spare with the canister. Remember Ford was not the only one using the Space Saver.

This caused Ford to send a letter in the mail to All Registered Owners that explained that the Space Saver Spare tire MUST be mounted to the car Before inflating. A yellow with black printing stick and peel label was included and Read:

1. Peel carefully from this corner.

2. Mount the label on the Space Saver Spare "TM" wheel near valve in clean, dry area.

I remember getting the letter in the mail, I think in 74, I put the sticker on the rim and it's still there. Have the mounting instructions of the Beer fridge door, but the yellow has faded out.

Got what's left of the build sheet, got the buck tag...so why the Hell did I not save this letter from Ford......... talking to my buddy and member "Metalmovers"  it's because we were into Racing them.

We never thought about collecting or restoring them.
Owned my BOSS since March 1974.

I was told you could bring your space saver into the dealership back then and they would put the double stem in your original as a safety recall service.  I was told this but I cannot confirm its validity as I was about the size of a space saver when this all supposedly happened.

Well I checked the space save in my car for the word DOT on the tire, none anywhere. Have owned this car since January or 1977, and it has been in the car the whole time. And yes it does have the double steel valve stem. So I'm guessing it was a recall thing ????
