from the Walordy files
« on: October 12, 2019, 10:55:43 am »
I recently had the opportunity to buy the entire project file from an article Alex Walordy did on my car for the July 74 issue of Super Stock Drag Racing Illustrated magazine.  There is a plethora of rough drafts, hand written and typed notes relative to the article plus over 100 negatives and a bunch of 8 x 10 black and white pictures. Kind of neat so I thought I would share a few pics albeit a Cobra Jet and not a BOSS  ;) ;D.  If you have an old car that Walordy did an article on send me a PM for the guy with the files contact info.  He knew Walordy when he was a kid and was able to buy all the files from the Walordy estate.

Here are a few early pics of my car which was bought off the lot Oct 10 1969 by Tom Stafford and Norm Nevin and turned into a Super Stock car.

Love those old pictures.
Unusual name on the trunk. I wonder what that is in reference to?
The good ol 70s when every car had a name.

The Sterile Coockoo is the name of a movie starring Lisa Minnelli, although it is spelled differently. It came out in the late 60’s.

Why it is on the car, I have no idea.

Very nice, thanks for sharing!

Derrell, haven’t heard anything in a while on the restoration. Any progress to update us on?

Thanks to all for the comments.  I was surprised to get the 8 x 10 glossy's and the first I ever heard about the car being called "The Sterile Coockoo"...  These are apparently very early pics of the car before it got painted red and blue like the picture below.  Can't tell by the black and white pics whether it's white or yellow.  I think Randy Gillis once told me they painted it white at some point at the direction of Dick Folger who as I understand was some West Coast Ford wheel. Yellow was the original color.

I’m thinking you should put the Keystones back on when you get it done.

    Darrell ,
I believe it was still yellow in the above pictures. That is NOT Alex Warlordy in the second picture. Alex looked more like Ed Iskenderian in face and "stature".  Those pictures are shortly before Norm did the minitubs as it still had 8" Keystones. They changed to a 10" wheel after the minitub work. The tow tabs were removed on the repaint as Tom had bought the Chevy ramp truck to haul the car on by then.

What a score to get all that documentation and photos. Invaluable! Thanks for posting it.
Love the old photos of Pomona back in the day! Grew up just a few miles from there.
