0F268183 - is this a valid Boss Mustang VIN?
« on: March 07, 2020, 11:43:50 pm »
Hey Fellas,

I got a picture of a VIN stamp on a Boss block that is currently installed in a 1970 Cougar Eliminator (0F91G568186).
You can see that it is stamped: 0F268183 - which would normally be a Boss Mustang VIN.  But with the center 4 digits being the same as the car VIN, I have to wonder if it might have been mis-stamped.  The owner of 30+ years (now deceased) believed that the car had its original drivetrain.

Can anyone tell me if 0F02G268183 is recorded in the Boss 302 Registry?

From previous posts the last 1970 B2s to be built at Dearborn all had VINs with 0F02G206xxx. So I would presume that the VIN on this is a mis-stamp/re-stamp.  Or it’s not a D0ZE block...... what is the block number and casting date? Is there an assembly date stamped on the drivers front below the heads?

Thanks Hopey!

I don't have access to the car myself to check other numbers, and I don't think the owners are very inclined to crawl under the car to find the casting number and date.  I don't believe it is a restamp ~ It looks pretty "legit" compared to other stamps in my files, and if they were restamping it for fraud purposes, why wouldn't they put the correct numbers on there?

Anyhoo - my next step will be to see if there was a Boss Eliminator built with "568183" VIN that this block might have come out of.

Thanks again for the help!

Mike

I should have said I did check the 2011 registry and the last few were all in that same range. I am not even sure they reached #268183 at Dearborn......

EDIT: saw this got moved to lost and found. Nothing lost or found, isn’t this about a mis-stamped block....

I think I originally posted it in the Lost & Found, not knowing for sure if it was or not.  Dave Wyrwas and Phil Parcells also told me that Boss Mustang VIN's didn't go that high.  So yeah, definitely a mis-stamped block.

So I'm going to try ordering a Marti for 0F91G568183 and see if there was a Boss Eliminator with that VIN that the block might have come from.

Thanks again for your input!

I agree Jimmy.  I think we were only mentioning "restamp" in the abstract.
