Buyer Beware - get your own Marti Reports
« on: May 23, 2020, 07:18:36 pm »
Spent some time with a fellow member here in this site checking out a '70 BOSS 302 for sale online. The car was well presented, looked good, seemed legit, a zillion photos. It also had a Deluxe Marti Report posted in one of the photos. Causally it all made sense. But the interested member had ordered his own Deluxe Marti Report and guess what? They didn't match. Closer examination of the posted Marti Report revealed it was modified to suit the car for sale by changing the original body and interior color. The car's current body and interior color was changed from original, the posted Marti Report was modified to reflect this change making it look like original colors.
(the door tag was modified too)

The dealer was called out about it and they claimed that's what they got from the PO and thought it was accurate. They've since pulled the Marti Report from their photo gallery.

First time I've seen a faked Marti Report
- Buyer Beware
- Trust no one
- Do you own homework
- Don't rely on any facts the seller provides that you care about (and that should be a lot)

What color is the car, where is it advertised, and what state is the dealer so some of us can more cautious?

I've seen a few doctored reports for Eliminators.  I've been asked about 3 different Eliminators this year by folks shopping on fairly obscure car sales sites.  I believe in all three cases they were all done by the same guy, as the MO is pretty much the same.  He'll take pics and info from an old legitimate listing and adjust the text a bit to fit his narrative.  He'll change a digit of the VIN on the Marti Report so that it appears legit.  Usually the story is that his relative has passed away and he is selling this one-owner car for peanuts.  The car is said to be in storage in Canada ~ this actually backfired on him when one potential buyer lived only an hour from the supposed storage location.  Buyer was then told he could only see the car if he paid a $500 non-refundable deposit (he declined).

Anyhow, it definitely pays to do your due diligence!  Contact the appropriate Registry - especially if the deal sounds too good to be true!

Would it be helpful to post the vins so that the legit owners can speak up?

There was discussion about "fake/modified" reports back in 2015 on the Cobra Jet site.  A basic Marti report is inexpensive and cheap insurance.  So nothing new here but caveat emptor.

Not surprised. With all the 'fake' tags, VIN plates, and now Marti reports. This is why 'I' prefer to see an original build sheet.

A standard Marti report only costs $18 and you usually receive it by email in a day or two. Cheap insurance when buying any Ford that Marti covers. Make sure what the seller claims the car was equipped with is actually correct, or identify what is missing.

Funny you should mention this, I looked up one of my BOSS 302 Mustangs I used to own. When I bought the car it was an original paint car, beautiful metallic blue car...you can imagine how stunned I was to see a dealer selling the car as a grabber orange car!

There is a scam right now in Canada about a 68 GT 390 fastback. Car is in Fort McMurray Alberta it says. Just send money and we will deliver it to you it says. We entertained them for a week and got them to call us!! We then told them we had a brother who could get the cash to them in Fort McMurray and pick up the car!!  They hung up.    Don't ever send money!!

You would have the same problem with pics of an "original" build sheet.  They aren't doctoring up actual physical paperwork ~ they are photoshopping images of the documents, which they will then email to you.  They have no real paperwork or real car for you to even inspect - and they don't want that, which is why they cut contact if you try to perform an actual inspection.

Ironically I have a friend who lives in Ft. McMurray Alberta.  A 2014 Ford Raptor with 27,000 miles was for sale here in Phoenix because the guy kept saying he had 2 homes, 1 in Phoenix, 1 in Ft.McMurray.  It was a total scam but I played along and had my friend check to see if the guy was real. Of course he wasn’t, their HR department at the one oil sands plant said he wasn’t an employee even though he had a fake Suncor email.  Funny how these guys can even have email addresses that “look” real.  And no clue why Ft.McMurray is where these scammers are saying they live.  I bet they are in Africa lol
